Ants
- From the thousands of species of ants in Australia,
only a handful are considered intrusive pests. It is
generally small black and brown ants (up to around 5mm
long) that develop large, hidden colonies around the
house. They can affect pavers, plants and even short-circuit
electrical components. Colonies of the larger species
of meat ants and bullants are easily found and eradicated,
but it is almost impossible to prevent foraging ants
entering a building. It is recommended to combine baits
and judicial spraying along the trailways and chemical
dusts blown into crevices.[top]

Spiders
- Most spiders are seldom seen during the day, due to
the majority of species being nocturnal. A spider will
either trap prey in a web or hunt them down, so lack of
webbing is not always an indicator that there are no spiders.
Removal is usually by way of inspection of the entire
premises, precision chemical application, and sometimes
even changing the colour of lighting in certain areas.
as they are sensitive to varying light sources (if you
are attracting insects to a light source, you are usually
also attracting their predators).[top] |

Cockroaches
- There are tens of thousands of species of cockroach,
but the most common ones are the German, Brown-Banded,
American, Smoky Brown and Australian Cockroaches. Cockroaches
are difficult to manage, but a starting point would be
to request a detailed inspection to determine the extent
and source of the infestation. A programme is then prepared
combining the use of trapping, low toxicity chemical application
and the elimination of food sources and nests.[top] |

Rodents
- There are three major species of rodents that are a
threat to a household - the Norway Rat, the Rooft Rat
and the House Mouse. They are common in most of the major
populated centres around the world. Rodents actively forage
at night and use soft materials such as shredded paper
or fabrics. Rodent presence is usually indicated by droppings,
stains caused by almost continual urination, and gnaw
marks. It is highly recommended to approach the problem
with an integrated pest management method of control,
combining inspection, sourcing the problem, removing foodstuffs
that are easily accessible, trapping, sealing off entry
points, and use of bait. [top] |

Flies
- Harmless but annoying. If you squish them they are really
messy. Some people use fly strips... these are good, but
don't look that great. Don't use a bugzapper... it makes
the flies explode. This is not good for BBQ's and other
food-related events. You can say 'Shoo' but this seems
to work on only the flies that speak English.[top] |

Fleas
- Although there are over 2,000 species of flea, the common
one found in the majority of instances is the cat flea,
and despite the name, it finds cats, dogs and humans acceptable
hosts. Fleas are responsible for a variety of problems,
ranging from Typhoid to simple itching and the spread
of tapeworms. To effectively manage this pest, floors
and furnishings should be vacuum cleaned before treatment.
Insect growth regulators of low toxicity to mammals are
highly recommended, and are available for application
by Savco.[top] |

Mosquitoes
- The key to mosquito control is adulticiding the pests.
This simply means killing the adult insects so that they
don't have the opportunity to breed. Your local council
helps to do this by using larvicides. Larvicides are simply
chemicals that kill an insect's eggs or larvae. this might
be effective in the short term, but it fails to eradicate
an insect population in the long term.[top] |
